Despite the snow, we'll still be having our Sunday Gathering this afternoon at 4pm at United Church on the Green. We'll sing some Christmas carols, hear from Kyle about the risk of believing in God's crazy plans (like that whole Christmas plan), and see what God will do.

United Church Christmas Pageant-CANCELED; ECV Worship Gathering Still On

UPDATE from Pastor John at United Church:

Given the heavy snow fall last night (and on-going) and poor road conditions this morning across the broad area from which our members travel, the moderator, senior deacon, director of music, and I have decided to cancel worship at United Church on the Green this morning, including, sadly, our Christmas pageant.

At this point, I am still optimistic that ECV's worship gathering can happen this afternoon, as the snow will have had time to stop and the city will have had some time to clear roads. We'll have a definitive decision by noon.

ECV Holiday Donation Opportunity to Refugees!

What: Donations for Refugees being assisted by IRIS

This Christmas season we are going to collect items to give as gifts to one of ECV's partners, IRIS - Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services (www.irisct.org). IRIS welcomes and resettles refugees- people fleeing persecution- from all over the world, including Iraq, Congo, Cuba, Afghanistan, Sudan, and other countries. IRIS helps them get started in their new lives in the US by providing basic needs and services, and helps them acculturate. We'll be hearing a partner update about IRIS this coming Sunday (12/13).

IRIS collects donations from the community to outfit refugees with everything they need in their new homes. Imagine fleeing your home and arriving in a new country with only 2 suitcases, if that! Now imagine coming from a place like Baghdad or the Congo, where the weather is VERY different, and coming into New Haven on a snowy/slushy, COLD day like today!

Over the next 2 weeks, we are hoping to help refugees in New Haven by collecting:

New thermal underwear for adults and kids, any size
New socks for adults and kids (including trouser socks for women)
Pots & pans (these can be used/from Goodwill as long as they're in good condition and are clean)
Umbrellas

If you would like to contribute to the collection, please bring these items to church on Sunday 12/13 or Sunday 12/20.

After a summer hiatus, our homegroups are back in action this fall. ECV's homegroups are really the central places of connection in our church, places where relationships are key--with God and with one another. Each group is a little different, but all of them are places where we connect deeply with one another and with God's work in the world, where we learn to hear God's voice (yes, God wants to speak to you!), where we hope and expect to find physical and emotional healing, and where we encourage one another in the ways that God is using us as agents of His healing in the world.

We're starting up 7 homegroups this fall, meeting on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. All the details are below. Come check one out or feel free to check out a couple different ones. They are all open and ready for action.

Vineyard Conference Opportunity- RE:FORM Conference in Baltimore

Hey everyone, I attended this conference last year and is is a great opportunity to network with like-minded folks within and outside of the Vineyard movement who are actually DOING something about key issues of our time: human trafficking, environmental stewardship, missional living in urban centers to name a few. The 2009 RE:FORM Conference will be held at Cedar Ridge Community Church in Baltimore, Md. area Sept. 16-18. This year’s conference will focus on three of RE:FORM’s seven areas of crisis:

Saturday's Men's BBQ in Edgewood Park has been moved to September 12.

We have a weather situation tomorrow. In case you haven't heard there is a tropical depression approaching. We will move the "End of the Summer" BBQ and change it to a "Welcome to Fall" BBQ.

On the bright side that frees everyone up to help Matt and Hannah load their moving truck as they prepare to move into their new house! Just a load, no unload as far as I know. 10 am, 79 Maple Street. Shouldn't be too wet the truck will be backed up right to the porch! WOOOOHOOO helping Matt and Hannah move!

Film Screening: More Than Walking (8/13)

Join us this Thursday (8/13), from 7:30-9:00 pm at 389 Norton Pkwy (a red house on the corner, follow the signs) for a screening of ECVer Jonathan Sigworth's just-completed documentary, More Than Walking. Afterwards there will be a Q&A session with Jonathan.

Some notes from Jonathan on the film:

People in wheelchairs are often fixed on the goal of walking again; but the film's point is that there are more important goals in life than just walking. In the movie he tells his story and the fascinating stories of four Indian quadriplegics. They are Riya, a 14-year-old injured in a diving accident at school; Rahul, 23, who was injured defending his uncle from a drunkard; Krishnan, 46, a resident at the military rehab center in Pune; and Navin, 38, who is starting a school for street children in Delhi.

If you can't make it this Thursday, there will be a second showing and Q&A on August 31, 7pm at The Space (295 Treadwell St. Hamden, CT 06517, www.thespace.tk). That will be a $10 ticket (this Thursday, of course, is free).

As you heard about on Sunday, THIS Friday (7/31) at noon is the deadline to sign-up to come to the Culture Center Summit hosted by the Greater Boston Vineyard.

Hannah and I went last year and it was a great opportunity to learn from and connect with other folks chasing after Jesus in places like New Haven: urban, culture-making centers with predominantly post-Christian, secular mindsets. The talks were phenomenal; the times of ministry were powerful. The only bummer for Hannah and me was not having more ECV people along to process, ask critical questions, and think about what God might be leading us to do in our particular context.

So, come and join us this year; we've got a good little crew of ECVers coming together; it should be a blast.

This year's conference is focused on the practical side of actually living out vibrant, "centered-set" faith. In addition to the main speakers, each participant will sign up for one of three tracks consisting of 4 separate breakout sessions in the morning and afternoon. The tracks are as follows:
PASTOR TRACK -- Led by Dave Schmelzer and Charles Park, this track is geared specifically towards to pastors and church leaders around the specifics of leading a centered-set church. Topics of discussion will include: centered-set preaching, language choices, structure of a service, and structure of a church.

WORSHIP & THE ARTS -- Led by Christopher Greco, Casey Corum, and David Linhart, this track is geared specifically towards worship leaders, artists, and musicians. Topics of discussion will include: centered-set worship, the role of worship within the larger service and different models of approaches, personnel and resources -- recruiting, equipping, resourcing and pastoring different teams, recording, gigging, and running art events.

LAITY -- Led by Brian Housman, Val Snekvik, and several others, this track is geared towards those interested in pursuing vibrant faith in their own great, secular places. Topics of discussion will include: having vibrant relationships with those around you by crossing the moat, living out centered-set faith in your area, praying for your six, tips on having great faith conversations, running SEEK, running a Leap of Faith, and other practical ways to pursue a life of vibrant faith.

Moving Forward in Life with a Living God

As we announced yesterday, please come join us this evening at 7:30pm at 180 Colony Road (Caleb & Kathy's place) for a conversation on moving forward in life with a Living God.

God's been at work in our community, stretching us in how we think about and practice healing the sick in Jesus' name, hearing from God, proclaiming deliverance from spiritual oppression, and other practical realities of God's presence and power in the world. Many of us have had powerful encounters with God and with one another in these areas at the conference last weekend, in the service last Sunday and in the relational trickle-down since.

How do we make sure that we continue to lean on God's present and powerful reality in our lives and in our life together as a community? What's exciting about that? What's challenging about that? What's still got you scratching your head about all this stuff? This evening will be a time for folks invested in ECV to ask these questions and prayerfully work towards leading our community forward into the things God has for us. So, please, come join us!

Conversation on Poverty and Homelessness

There are around 1200 homeless people in New Haven every night. We see some of them. Others remain invisible. The economic disparity in the New Haven area is the 7th greatest in this nation. Can we be united?

We are champions of our city. We desire fullness and health. We want to be able to answer the question of "What is the meaning of this City?" We want that answer to give life to ourselves and others.

We are trying to help our city with its issues of poverty and homelessness. Tonight, we hope to partner with others so we can labor alongside other workers in this city. Come here folks talk about giving food on the green and developing authentic community, relationship building and resource sharing at a local homeless shelter, and providing community wholeness and development for a splintered city.

We want to learn to serve our city better. Please come and provide your experiences, comments, and questions. See you tonight.

All of the sessions will be led by our team, and will have Jordan Seng as the main speaker. Jordan is a dear friend with whom we have done much ministry. His bio is below:

Jordan Seng, the pastor of Bluewater Mission, has been engaged in teaching, healing and prophetic ministry, worship, small groups, missions and church planting for the last twenty years. Before helping to begin Bluewater Mission, he served for four years in the Presbyterian church and about 16 in the Vineyard association of churches. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Theory from the University of Chicago. He and his wife Sonya have two children.

All of the meetings will have plenty of time for prayer for folks, as well as worship and childcare.

There are no breakout sessions...we will all be together the whole time. Each session will be devoted to a different aspect of life with a living God (hence the title of the conference ;-)), with a focus on practical empowerment for average folks. As it stands now, we will have a session on the power of the Holy Spirit, a session of hearing from God/prophecy, a session on healing, and a wildcard session. We are being a little bit flexible on the sessions, so that we can flow with whatever God seems to be doing with our group.

We do not expect a huge crowd... I would guess fifty or so... it will be accessible, human-size, practical, and powerful. We hope you can make it.
