Giving on the Green: Sharing Your Wednesday Lunch

Every Wednesday 12:30pm
Slifka Center en route to New Haven Green

Got a free lunch break this summer? Every Wednesday afternoon at 12:30pm people meet at the Slifka Center (80 Wall Street) and walk to the New Haven Green where we give out bagged lunches and drinks to anyone who asks for them. People recognize our faces and the brown boxes we carry. Those in need often ask for someone to pray with them and relationships form from week to week as many people gather around a bench and talk with us. If you are interested in this type of outreach, please consider joining us one Wednesday. It’d be great to have ECVers joining this larger city effort. Hope to see folks in the main lobby at the Slifka Center on Wednesday.

Every Wednesday 5:30pm
Phelps Gate en route to Columbus House

There is another opportunity for community outreach called Nightrunners that takes place on Wednesday nights at 5:30pm. Nightrunners is a local ministry that visits Columbus House, a homeless shelter in New Haven. We talk with residents about their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs over dinner and orient them towards resources available at Columbus House while fostering relationships. We meet at Phelps Gate (344 College Street) at 5:30pm and drive to Columbus House (586 Ella T. Grasso Boulevard; you can drive yourself if that’s easier). If you’re interested in either opportunity call Josh at 317.522.7179 or e-mail him.

This Thursday: "One Thing" Group

This Thursday evening (7:30pm @ 79 Maple St #1) for our Thursday of Awesomeness, we're kicking off a mini-series on the "One Thing."

The idea is to talk about how we can live our lives in an integrated way—as one thing, instead of so many disparate pieces. The hope is that as we learn to integrate our lives, our schedules, our ways of thinking and talking, we'll be in a better place individually and collectively to interact constructively with all the various folks in our lives about what it means for us to follow Jesus. So come join me (Matt) and Josh for some teaching, conversation and prayer along these lines this Thursday (6/25), 7/9, 7/23, and 7/30 at 7:30 at 426 Prospect #6.

MEN: Chips, Salsa and hanging out!

Men's event Saturday 1-3 pm

Due to the 80% chance of rain we will be moving the men's event to Titus and Julianne Kaphar's house located at 389 Norton Parkway in New Haven. Their house is on the corner of Norton Parkway and Goffe.

Bring your own salsa and beverages, we will provide the chips! How hot can you go? Homemade, storebought, secret recipe - whatever your preference!

Come and hang out, eat some chips and salsa and get to know the other men in the church! Robb Evans will talk briefly about some paradigms of fatherhood in the bible and how that relates to men - fathers and non-fathers alike.

Come for fellowship and hang out time! See you on Saturday!

If you have questions please call Robb at 203-543-4525.

Picnic & Kickball CANCELLED

Picnic & Kickball CANCELLED

In case you missed it Sunday: This summer, while most homegroups are on break, we're going to be gathering every Thursday for Thursdays of Awesomeness. What will be happening? Well, different things every week. Some weeks we'll use as part of a mid-week teaching mini-series ("The One Thing" group–more coming); other weeks will simply be times to connect with one another and enjoy the summer.

This week, the plan got rained out… but if you're still looking for some food and people to share it with, you could try stopping by the International Refugee Day events sponsored by IRIS over at Luce Hall on Yale's campus or bring your picnic dinner and stop by Hannah & Matt's place at 79 Maple Street #1 in New Haven. We'll scare up some indoor games (is it possible to play kickball on a Wii?!) and connect with one another; feel free to come by anytime between 6 and 9pm.

Stay dry…

Church @ the Playwright (6/14)

Church at the Playwright
144 Temple St.
Sunday, 6/14 4pm

Just a reminder: TOMORROW, 6/14, we will be meeting in the back room at the Playwright at 144 Temple Street for our regular Sunday worship gathering at 4pm. Josh Williams will be teaching; it should be great.

So, come, bring a friend, and experience the rare opportunity to worship God in the inimitable atmosphere of New Haven's favorite Irish-church-cum-Irish-pub.

[Fine print: Parents and children should meet the Children's Ministry folks at the United Church Parish House at 323 Temple Street and they'll take care of the kids there. We were bumped from our normal meeting space; we'll be back at United Church 6/21.]

Picnicking on the Green

Summer is here. Bring on the fun. Bring on the food.
Bring on the Picnics on the Green!

If you're looking for something to do on Sunday evenings after our worship gathering, join us on the Green(across the street). Weather permitting, we'll be out there each week.

So, pack a dinner, some snacks, and drinks... or pick something up at the neighboring eateries.

Remember, this Sunday, we'll be at the Playwright. Also, THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS will be performing at 6pm on the stage, so it'll just be us ECVers and a few hundred other New Haveners hanging out on the green.

Hope to see you there!

Pray on, Pray-er: Thursday Morning Prayer at 426 Prospect

Hey ECV,

As some of you know, a group of us gather together on Thursday mornings to pray. This summer, we will continue these short prayer meetings at a new location: The roof of 426 Prospect St.(right across from the Divinity School.) Eoin Burke, Jonathan Jones, and I live in Apt # 6 in that same building. Starting at 8am and lasting ‘til 8:45am, ECV morning prayer is a great way to start your day before work. We pray for the needs of our church and for our city. We believe God responds to our cries in prayer, and it will be great to gather together as a Body to witness God’s movement.

We will open the doors to the apartment around 7:30am so feel free to come early for some chatting…and if any of you wanted to bring some breakfast foods for before of after, we would not be mad at you. Whatsoever. Nope. Lastly, we’re trying to create a roof garden of sorts for the summer. If you have any stray plants, then please bring them our way. As they grow, we’ll grow…

See you Thursday!
